A nostalgic look at the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s university days

Prince William and Kate Middleton first looked at each other in a dorm hallway at the University of St Andrews in late September 2001. It wasn’t a long interaction. (“I turned bright red when I met you and kind of scuttled myself, feeling very shy about meeting you,” Middleton confessed to William in an interview nine years later. ) But it was memorable: Within weeks, the young prince was inviting his dorm mate to join him and his friends for breakfast in the dining hall. According vanity loungeboth revolved around the same meal: muesli and fruit.

She studied art history, he geography. He played water polo, she modeled in the student fashion show (in a memorable transparent dress that caught the eye of the young prince). By the fall of 2002, they had moved into a shared house with off-campus friends. Their rooms were only one floor apart. Sometimes, in an effort to impress his pretty roommate, William would try to cook for Kate: “I had to walk around and save something that was okay,” she recalled.

It was in this St Andrews home that the two became something more: “It kind of blossomed from there, really. We just saw each other more and, you know, we hung out a little more,” William said.

On his 21st birthday in June 2003, Prince William opened up about his love life: “If I want a girl and I really love her and she loves me back, that which is rare, I ask her out,” he told reporters. “But at the same time, I don’t want to put them in an embarrassing situation because a lot of people don’t quite understand what comes with knowing me.”

Middleton, however, increasingly showed that she knew. In March 2004, the two were caught skiing together in Switzerland – and their relationship was exposed by British tabloids. (“Finally… Wills has a daughter,” read one headline. “Prince and Kate so close in Klosters.”) After graduating in 2005, William and Kate were the subjects of photographers’ lenses .
