Experts offer tips for high-end home design for less

Kourtney and Khloé Kardashian, Eva Mendes, Cher and more celebs took to British interior design guru to the stars Martyn Lawrence Bullard for his impeccable taste and attention to detail.

The Los Angeles-based author and TV personality is consistently named one of the world’s top 100 interior designers by Architectural Summary. But you don’t have to be an interior design fashionista to create an upscale vibe. Bullard says you can easily turn a boring living room wall into a personalized gallery wall, complete with stylish black-and-white photos (or several thoughtfully hung framed works of art).

“[You can] create a bold little moment, a little glam, by adding photography to create this amazing gallery wall…it’s something really easy to do at home,” Bullard told Yahoo! Life, in a recent interview. And share her love of amazing window treatments. “To me, the jewelry in our living rooms is really how we dress the windows.”

Other high-end tips at a lower cost: optimize space and zhuzh set up your kitchen with a wall pot rack. Also consider on-trend kitchen looks like open shelving, cabinets painted in darker hues, and shiny gold/brass hardware.

“Fancy” decor for a song

“Designing a space doesn’t have to break the bank, if you mix more expensive and less expensive elements,” says Sandra Asdourian of Sandra Asdourian Interiors in Babylon. “And the best designs have a layered look.

She suggests: First, determine your budget. Second, it is better to invest in pieces that you will keep for a long time, ie your dining room table, your sofa, your carpets, your bedroom furniture. And third, mix in low-priced items, like pillows, vases, lamps, artwork, accessories.

“Paint is one of the least expensive things you can do for your home,” adds Asdourian. “Do you have a guest bedroom that needs sprucing up?” Paint it mint green and update the bedding, and you have a new bedroom. Looking for a kitchen update? Add new lighting and bar stools — and if the budget allows — paint the cabinets.

Have a painting or print you love? Cropping it could give that blah space a whole new look.

be imaginative

FOR INSTANT IMPACT: Hang a striking large mirror and/or eye-catching light fixture in an entryway, living room, bedroom, or hallway. There are tons of well-priced styles to choose from. Adding interesting sculpture pieces can also dramatically elevate a space.

Expect “oohs” and “aahs” from your guests.

According to Wayfair Professional Interior Stylists, jewel-toned accent pieces in rich amethysts, brilliant blues and glorious greens can create a glam/luxe look: velvet chairs, ottomans, pillows, sofas, tufted headboards, etc. And why not bring a touch of yesteryear to modern spaces with retro classics?

Sometimes a little refresh is all your home needs to take it to the next level.

A design professional can help

“Artwork always makes a statement and can really elevate any space,” says Robyn Baumgarten of Interiors By Just Design in Woodbury.

A local condo received refreshing high-end designer touches when it incorporated one-of-a-kind wall art throughout. And in the dated kitchen, the cabinets have new door fronts and stainless steel open shelving has been installed, along with a custom wine rack (above the fridge).

“Whether a client is on a budget or not, I always have the cabinets made to reach the ceilings because it’s a more custom look. Now the kitchen screams high end, but it was done on a budget, like the bathroom,” says Baumgarten, who gave this bland space a very custom look by adding just a vanity, dramatic (vinyl) wallpaper, and unusual abstract wall sculptures.

“Good design is all about knowing which pieces to splurge on, and how and where to save,” she adds. “Having many sources to buy from and knowing how to put it all together can really give the customer a ‘wow’ look…for less.”
