Inside the £1.3million Darras Hall mansion, revamped by a North East designer

The family that owns the property wanted a contemporary house with a ‘London look’ that is also warm and are delighted with the result

For interior designer Louise Whitfield, this was the dream commission – an incredible home to get her creative juices flowing.

High View in Darras Hall, Northumberland is owned by Keith White and his family and they wanted to develop it for the market.

Properties at Darras Hall, Ponteland, the exclusive upscale estate near Newcastle, tend to sell by location only and it would have been tempting to play it safe by decorating it in neutral tones.

Keith said: “But I wanted to maximize her potential, which is why we brought in Louise.

“We wanted someone local who understood the ‘London look’ of the moment – a contemporary home that was also warm.”

Louise, 39, based in Cullercoats, North Tyneside, said she was initially asked for details for the master bedroom, hallway and daughter’s bedroom.

Following a first meeting to find out their tastes, what they like, she creates a “mood board” of fabrics, colors, accessories, lighting and fittings.

“They loved it and they gave it the green light,” Louise said.

In the end, she worked on all the pieces and she brought in local craftsmen who brought the vision to life.

Keith said: “It would have been easy to get out of the area, but we wanted to champion the talent that there is in the North East.”

In addition to Louise, the extraordinary polished plaster ceiling was created by Ardor Venetian of Ashington, Northumberland, the marble was supplied by RO Surfaces, Swalwell, lighting and smart home technology from Bang & Olufsen, Newcastle while the construction work was carried out by AJE Real Estate Development of Cramlington.

“All local entrepreneurs,” Keith said proudly.

Louise said: “They were fantastic clients who trusted my vision. It was great to work as a team, I was not just a designer, and that was very important. This is their home and that must have been good.”

And the end result is beautiful as our photos show.

This is a fabulous four bedroom luxury home, set on a lovely 0.31 acre garden, offering great privacy and security with views of the surrounding gardens.

The home design incorporates up to date smart technology by ‘Wakefields’ with CCTV and security system, mood and feature lighting, Bang & Olufsen sound system throughout and underfloor heating.

The attention to detail is incredible in the design and conversion of the original house, with stunning cantilevered sliding doors in the corner of the open plan living room/kitchen that retract into the pocket walls to bring the outside in seamlessly.

There are imported Portuguese tiles, Venetian plaster on one of the ceilings and Spanish “Emprador” granite installed in the German “Next125” kitchen.

There is a fantastic lounge/cinema room with fitted bar and entertainment area, and elevated seating, a wonderful open plan kitchen and family lounge, with doors opening onto the paved terrace, contemporary fireplace and double doors opening onto the cinema room.

First floor landing Master bedroom with walk-in closet and luxurious en-suite bathroom/wc with double ‘his and hers’ showers, double marble vanity, bath and steam sauna | Three other bedrooms, all with dressing rooms and en-suite shower rooms with marble basins.
