JKC Gallery ‘Photo Show Live’ Lunchtime Artist Talk scheduled for Thursday, September 29, 2022 at noon

Trenton, NJ – ‘Photo Show Live’, the new lunchtime photography conference at the James Kerney Campus Gallery (JKCG) of Mercer County Community College (MCCC) at 137 North Broad Street in Trenton, will take place on September 29 from noon to 1 p.m. This month, JKC Gallery Director Michael Chovan-Dalton features Wendy Ewald, an artist who has spent more than 40 years collaborating with children, families and teachers around the world. During this session, Ewald and Chovan-Dalton will discuss Ewald’s books ‘The Devil Leaves His Cave’ and ‘Portraits and Dreams’, as well as his film, ‘Portraits and Dreams’ which aired on PBS and will be shown at the JKC gallery.

Chovan-Dalton remarked, “Wendy Ewald will be joining Photo Show Live remotely while I’m in the JKC Gallery. I look forward to discussing the details of his books and the methodology behind creating his film. She has an incredible story that has taken her across the United States and around the world.

Ewald’s film “Portraits and Dreams” debuted nationally and streaming on the PBS documentary series POV and pov.org in 2020. “Portraits and Dreams: Photographs and Stories By Children of The Appalachians,” now reposted by MACK (UK), is the result of a unique creative collaboration between Ewald and the students she taught at three elementary schools in Letcher County, Kentucky in the 1970s. Tasked with finding ways to represent the life of these children, she gave each child a camera and continued with interviews about their childhood in the mountains.

The film revisits the photographs created by the schoolchildren, their work as visionary photographers and the lives they have led since.
