The Matthews Gallery at the Matthews Opera House in Spearfish begins its Summer Art Series on June 3. This annual showcase of Black Hills artists will be open to the public through Labor Day. The exhibition includes paintings, digital artworks, pottery and glassware.
“The response to our call for artists has been outstanding,” said Kara Carver, Director of Matthews Gallery. “Our summer exhibition will feature some truly extraordinary pieces. We have so many new faces arriving at the Matthews as well as a number of returning favourites. The variety of work is impressive. »
The Summer Art Series will kick off with a reception from 5-7 p.m. on June 3. The reception will give the public a first look at the exhibition and will introduce a new feature to the gallery: a weekly silent auction. Each week, a work of art will be unveiled at auction at Matthews. The public can view the item in the gallery and place a bid. At the end of the week, the winner will be contacted. New works will be revealed at auction the following week.

This ongoing fundraiser will support the Matthews’ efforts to provide free programming to Spearfish and surrounding communities and to maintain a creative place where people can gather.
“Every piece in the gallery is for sale, which is a wonderful opportunity for our local artists,” Carver said. “Our hope is that people will fall in love with the pieces and take them home that day to enjoy them long term.”
“The level of artistry, whether performance-based or visual, is staggering. The Black Hills have become a cultural center and it is essential that we continue to champion the growth of ideas and expression,” said Carver.
